Lauril’s Loft White Dove Release started out as a chance trip to the feed store and evolved into the family business that it is today.  We purchased our first two doves as pets because we were intrigued by their beauty as well as their history of being carrier birds during WWI and WWII.  Our first birds gave us so much enjoyment that we were soon intrigued by the idea that we could release these beautiful birds at special events.  After some preliminary research, we found out that dove releases were being done in many parts of the state, but not particularly here in Whatcom County.  We purchased a breeding pair from New Jersey and then added to our breeding stock with some beautiful birds purchased in Seattle.  We now breed our own birds and keep careful records of each birth and growth in charts that help us determine which birds are best suited for each occasion. 

 

We are asked many times where the name of the business came from.  Lauril’s Loft is named after my two amazing children who are very involved with the business.  Riley is 12 and is starting to handle releases at events, and Lauren is 9.  Lauren is our wonderful bird feeder and reporter of who has had a baby!  Together with my husband who helps with the building of the birds’ housing, we are all involved in some way.  Our home is a place where we all share in the enjoyment of the birds as well as spending lots of time just playing outside and having fun as a family.  We live in the heart of Bellingham and the birds live in a special loft right in our back yard.  My husband Kirk is a Realtor in Bellingham.

 

Another question that we are frequently asked is “Do the birds come back?”  Yes!  Our birds are specifically trained to fly from your special event back to their home here at their home in the city.  It is not completely understood how rock doves navigate, but it is believed that they use their eyesight as well as the drive to stay with their mate and to be fed as their main drive to always fly back to the same spot.
